Showing numbers by using short lines is called “segment display.” The lines or segments are combined to display numbers on an LCD. If you look carefully at the segments, you will notice that the number 8 is displayed when all seven segments of one digit are on. This display method lets us display the numbers 0 through 9 by turning electricity on/off the least number of times. Today, we also have calculators that display more complicated symbols and graphics, and they use a different kind of display method.

With only seven lines, the segment display can make numbers and letters. These kinds of displays are used all over the place, including time schedules at airports and digital watches. See how many symbols and shapes you can make by drawing seven lines! |
